Lakers Win 11th Straight With 3-2 Victory at Ashland

#2 Grand Valley State increased its winning streak to 11 straight matches as the Lakers defeated Ashland, 3-2 (30-18, 26-30, 30-19, 28-30, 15-12) Saturday afternoon. GVSU improves to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the GLIAC. The Lakers will continue their five match road trip as they travel to the U.P. schools next weekend.

Grand Valley State started off the match, dominating the first game, posting 18 attacks and a .417 team hitting percentage en route to a 30-18 win. The Eagles bounced back to hit .400 in the second game, a 30-26 Ashland victory. GVSU recorded 17 kills, while hitting .519 in its 30-19 win, but Ashland came back to tie up the match at two games apiece with a 30-28 game four win. The Lakers went up 8-7 in game five and then rattled off four straight points to take a 12-8 lead. GVSU scored its last two points to win the match on service errors by Ashland.

The Lakers posted a .246 team hitting percentage, while the Eagles hit just .172. GVSU recorded 13 more kills, four more service aces, and two more digs than Ashland. The two teams combined for 32 service errors.

Senior middle blocker Meghan Moore posted 17 kills, a .343 hitting percentage, three digs, and three assisted blocks, while senior outside hitter Megan Helsen added 15 kills, four service aces, 11 digs, and three assisted blocks. Junior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple tallied 13 kills, two solo and three assisted blocks, while hitting .346. Sophomore middle blocker Danielle Alexander recorded 10 kills, two digs, and one solo and two assisted blocks.

Sophomore setter Jamie Ashmore posted seven kills, 48 assists, five service aces, and 17 digs for the Lakers and junior libero Alyson Riley added 20 digs and four assists. Freshman outside hitter Meredith Young recorded three kills and nine digs.

The Lakers will travel to #24 Northern Michigan on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m., Michigan Tech on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m., and Lake Superior State on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
