#1 Grand Valley State improved to 1-1 on the season, picking up a 3-2 (31-29, 26-30, 30-27, 28-30, 15-12) win over #11 Florida Southern in the Florida Southern Classic in Lakeland, Fla. Friday night. GVSU will play two more matches on Saturday. The Lakers will face Texas Woman's University at 2:30 p.m. and Angelo State at 6:00 p.m.
GVSU tallied a 31-29 game one win, posting 18 kills as a team. Florida Southern came back to take game two, 30-26, but the Lakers recorded a 30-27 game three win. The Moccasins won game four, 30-28, but Grand Valley State sealed the match with a 15-12 win in game five.
The Lakers had five players with 10 or more kills in the match and were led by sophomore Danielle Alexander who recorded 16 kills and one solo and two assisted blocks. Senior Meghan Moore posted 15 kills and six assisted blocks, while senior Megan Helsen added 14 kills, 19 digs, and four assisted blocks. Junior Erica Vandekopple tallied 13 kills and a .300 hitting percentage and sophomore Lauren Reber added 10 kills and two assisted blocks.
Junior Alyson Riley tallied a team-high 37 digs, while junior Cortney Lokker posted 10 digs, five assisted blocks, three kills and two aces. Sophomore Jamie Ashmore recorded 31 assists, while sophmore Megan Walling added 33 assists.
