Allendale, Mich. -- #18 Grand Valley State completed its four-game weekend sweep over Gannon with a pair of wins on Sunday. GVSU won the first game 5-4, followed by an 11-2 win in game two. GVSU improves to 24-7 overall and 11-3 in GLIAC action. Grand Valley State will return to action Tuesday, April 11 at Eastern Michigan. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. GVSU will then return home for a Wednesday GLIAC doubleheader versus Northwood at 2 p.m.
Game 1
Gannon scored a single run in the top of the second on three hits, two of which were fisted into left field. Starting pitcher Jeremy Dow got out of trouble by striking out the side. C Nick Smith opened the Laker half of the second with single, followed by a walk to DH Brandon Bard. 3B Lee VanStreain executed a sacrafice bunt to move Smith and Bard up on base. Smith then scored on a wild pitch to even the score at 1-1.
Gannon scored a run in the top of the third on two hits, but the Lakers opened the fourth with singles by 1B Casey Robrahn and C Nick Smith. DH Brandon Bard sacraficed Robrahn and Smith up a base before 3B Lee VanStreain singled sharply to left to plate Robrahn. LF Pat Radde scored Smith when he reached on error and CF Jeff Carrero scored VanStreain with a single to center. Gannon scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game 4-4. The Golden Knights scored the pair on a hit batsman and an error, followed by a wild pitch and a single.
However, GVSU scored the game-winner in the bottom of the fifth when Robrahn singled and advanced to third on a single to right by Smith. Robrahn scored on a Brandon Bard's slow roller just out of the reach of the Gannon pitcher.
Jeremy Dow improved to 6-0 with the win. Dow tossed a complete game six-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Only two of Gannon's four runs were earned. Smith was 3-3 with two runs scored, while Robrahn pick up a pair of hits. Carrero, Bard, Vanstreain and Radde each drove in a run.
Game Two
Gannon opened game two with an unearned run in the first. GVSU answered back as 2B Spud McKenzie drew a two-out walk, stole second and then scored on RF Nick Sandy's single to center. Gannon took a 2-1 lead in the second when Jon Dziomba homered off Grant Payton. That would be the last Gannon batter to reach base of Payton as he retired 15 straight before giving way to Vince Rizzi in the seventh.
The Lakers scored four runs in the bottom of the second off four hit batsmen and three singles. CF Jeff Carerro plated two runs with a single, while SS Dan Skika and Sandy each drove in a run.
Grand Valley State added two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to secure the win. Grant Payton improved to 7-0 with the win. Payton yielded two hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts. Vince Rizzi struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh. CF Jeff Cerrero drove in three runs and collected one hit, while SS Dan Skirka was 2-5 with two RBIs. RF Nick Sandy plated two runs with a pair of singles. LF Craig Baugh collected three hits and drove in one.
