Lakers Split Doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College

Grand Valley State split a non-conference doubleheader at Saint Joseph's College Thursday afternoon. The Lakers dropped game one, 4-1 and came back to win game two, 5-1. GVSU is now 17-13 overall and will travel to Ferris State on Saturday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m. for a GLIAC doubleheader.

Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one, scoring its first run in the bottom of the third inning. The Lakers tied the game posting its lone run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, freshman left fielder Karen Walters singled to first base and advanced to second on the throw. Freshman short stop Nichole Woityra singled to bring in Walters.

Saint Joseph's added two runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to seal the 4-1 win. Each team tallied seven hits and one error apiece.

Freshman Lori Andjelich (7-6) suffered the loss, throwing 5.0 innings. She allowed six hits, four runs, and four walks, while striking out three. Senior Kristin Jenner pitched the final inning, allowing just one hit.

Walters was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Woityra went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Lakers tallied a five-run third inning in game two and Saint Joseph's couldn't overcome the GVSU lead. Sophomore catcher Katie Kring started the inning, reaching base on a passed ball on a third strike. She advanced to second and senior left fielder Shelby Brayton reached first on an error by the short stop. Nichole Woityra walked to load the bases. Senior center fielder Tara Marsh singled through the right side to score two runs and two outs later junior first baseman Crista Buresh singled up the middle to score another run. Sophomore designated hitter Elizabeth Smith singled through the right side to score the final two runs of the inning.

Saint Joseph's scored its lone run in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to overcome GVSU's lead.

Sophomore Stephanie Cole picked up her eighth win of the season, throwing all seven innings. She allowed six hits and just one run, while striking out four batters.

Marsh was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Buresh went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Smith brought in the other two runs.
