Grand Valley State Splits Final Home Doubleheader With Wayne State

Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader with Wayne State on Saturday, falling 2-0 in game one and coming back to win game two, 4-3 in eight innings. The Lakers are now 26-18 overall and 10-8 in the GLIAC, while the Warriors are 29-22 and 15-5. GVSU will travel to Lake Superior State for its last regular season doubleheader on Monday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m.

In game one, Wayne State scored two runs in the top of the third inning and neither team scored again in the game. The Warriors out hit the Lakers 8-6 and both teams left seven runners on base. Senior catcher Megan Smith went 2-for-3 with a double, while senior left fielder Shelby Brayton also was 2-for-3. Junior first baseman Crista Buresh and senior third baseman Denise Ireton tallied the Lakers other two hits.

Freshman Lori Andjelich (10-9) suffered the loss, throwing all seven innings. She allowed eight hits and two earned run, while striking out nine batters.

In game two, Wayne State scored first, posting a run in the bottom of the first inning. Grand Valley State came back to tie the game at 1-1, scoring a run in the top of the third. Senior center fielder Tara Marsh reached first base on an error by the short stop and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by freshman short stop Nichole Woityra. Sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss singled to left field to drive in Marsh.

Wayne State regained the lead as they scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, but once again the Lakers battled back to tie the game at 2-2. Brayton singled to center field to start the game and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Marsh. Woityra singled to center field, bringing in Brayton.

The Lakers took their first lead of the day as Buresh hit a home run to left field in the top of the seventh to put GVSU up 3-2. Wayne State scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Grand Valley State won the game in the eighth inning as they tallied the game-winning run with two outs. Megan Smith singled and advanced to second base on a fielding error by the left fielder. Buresh was intentionally walked to bring up Brayton. She singled to center field to drive in the winning run.

The Lakers tallied nine hits in the game and was led by Woityra who was 3-for-3 with a RBI. Brayton went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.

Sophomore Stephanie Cole threw the fist 6.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, two earned runs, and two walks, while striking out two. Andjelich (11-9) came in for the final 1.1 innings to pick up the win. She didn't allow a hit or a run and struck out four batters.
