Lakers Sweep Hillsdale in Doubleheader Friday

Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader from Hillsdale College on Friday afternoon. The Lakers won game one, 2-1 in 10 innings, and took game two, 3-0. GVSU improves to 25-17 overall and 9-7 in GLIAC play, while Hillsdale drops to 23-21 and 9-9. The Lakers will host Wayne State in a key GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday with game one beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Game one was a pitchers dual as neither team scored until the 10th inning. The international tie break rule goes into affect in the 10th inning and each team places a runner on second base at the start of their half of the inning. The Chargers scored their runner in the top of the inning to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Miranda Titler was placed on second base for the Lakers and she advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss. Sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski tripled to left center to score Titler. Two batters later, junior first baseman Crista Buresh reached first base on an error by the third baseman and Moleski scored to win the game for GVSU.

Moleski tallied the Lakers lone hit of the game. Freshman Lori Andjelich pitched all 10 innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out 10 batters.

Grand Valley scored its first run in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Senior left fielder Shelby Brayton started off the inning by reaching first base on an error by the left fielder and advanced to third base on the throw. Two outs later, Moleski singled to left field to bring in the first Laker run of the game.

In the top of the seventh, GVSU tallied to more runs to seal the 3-0 win. With two outs, freshman short stop Nichole Woityra reached first base on an error by the short stop. She advanced to second on a single by Preuss and scored on another Moleski hit. Senior third baseman Denise Ireton singled to bring in the second run of the inning.

The Lakers outhit Hillsdale, 8-2, in the second game. Moleski was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith went 2-for-3. Sophomore Stephanie Cole picked up her 13th win of the season, throwing all seven innings of action. She allowed just two hits, while striking out six.
