Lakers Drop Doubleheader at Ashland

Grand Valley State dropped a GLIAC doubleheader at Ashland on Friday. The Lakers fall to 22-16 overall and 6-6 in GLIAC action. GVSU will play another conference doubleheader at Findlay on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

In game one, Ashland jumped out to a 1-0 lead as they scored first in the bottom of the third inning. GVSU took a 2-1 lead as the Lakers posted two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss started off the inning with a home run to left field. Senior catcher Megan Smith doubled to left center with one out and scored on a single to center field by senior left fielder Shelby Brayton.

Ashland came back to take a 3-2 lead as they scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Lakers tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth on two GVSU hits and a sacrifice fly that brought in the game-tying run. Ashland scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to take game one, 4-3.

Grand Valley outhit Ashland by an 11-5 margin, but left eight runners stranded on base. Brayton went 3-for-3, while junior first baseman Crista Buresh and Preuss each tallied two hits.

Freshman Lori Andjelich (9-8) suffered the loss, allowing five hits and four runs in 6.2 innings of action. She struck out eight batters, while walking just one.

In game two, the Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after senior third baseman Denise Ireton led off the second inning with a home run to left field. Ashland tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, but GVSU came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth. The Lakers took advantage of two Eagles errors to score a run to take a 2-1 lead.

Ashland scored five runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead. The Lakers added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and one in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Ashland lead.

Buresh was the lone Laker to tally two hits in game two. Sophomore Stephanie Cole (11-4) recorded the loss, allowing four hits, four earned runs, and three walks in 4.1 innings. Andjelich came in to pitch 1.1 innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. Junior Allison Crews threw the final 1.1 innings of action, striking out one batter.
