Lakers Split Doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State

Grand Valley State split a GLIAC doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers won game one, 2-0 and then dropped game two, 4-3. GVSU is now 14-12 overall and 1-3 in GLIAC action. Grand Valley State will host Cornerstone in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 4 at 3:30 p.m.

In game one, the two teams were scoreless until the Lakers posted two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski singled to lead off the inning, but was thrown out as senior third baseman Denise Ireton reached first base on a fielder's choice. GVSU loaded the bases as junior first baseman Crista Buresh walked followed by a single by sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith. Sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss doubled to bring in the only two runs of the game.

Freshman Lori Andjelich (6-4) picked up the win as she pitched a three-hitter in seven innings of action. She walked four batters, while striking out seven. Elizabeth Smith went 2-for-3, while Lisa Preuss was 2-for-3 with two RBI. The Lakers outhit the Red Birds 6-3 in game one.

SVSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two, posting a run in the top of the second inning. Grand Valley came back to take the lead, scoring two runs of its own in the bottom of the third. Freshman shortstop Nichole Woityra walked with one out in the third and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior center fielder Tara Marsh. Kristin Moleski and Denise Ireton recorded back-to-back walks to load the bases. Crista Buresh reached base on an error by the shortstop and two Laker runs crossed the plate.

Saginaw Valley State took the lead back as they scored two runs in the top of the fourth to go up, 3-2. GVSU tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Woityra walked to lead off the inning and moved to third base on a double by Moleski. She scored as Ireton reached base on an error by the shortstop. SVSU scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh.

Senior Kristin Jenner started the game for GVSU, pitching 1.2 innings. She allowed one run, three walks, and struck out one. Sophomore Stephanie Cole came in to throw 4.1 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, two walks, while striking out four. Freshman Lori Andjelich (6-5) suffered the loss as she pitched the final 3.0 innings. She gave up three hits, one run, one walk, and struck out four batters.

Moleski led the Lakers with three hits, while Ireton and Smith posted the other two GVSU hits. Grand Valley committed five errors in the game.
