Lakers Split Doubleheader With Gannon Saturday

Grand Valley State split a doubleheader with Gannon University at the Laker Softball Field on Saturday afternoon. Gannon won game one, 8-2, but GVSU came back to win game two, 3-2. The Lakers are now 22-14 overall and 6-4 in GLIAC action, while Gannon is 24-13 overall and 5-5 in the GLIAC. GVSU will travel to Ashland and Findlay next weekend for two more GLIAC doubleheaders.

Grand Valley State scored first in game one tallying a run in the bottom of the first inning. Senior center fielder Tara Marsh singled with one out and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski. Senior third baseman Denise Ireton singled to right center to bring in Marsh.

Gannon added two runs in the top of the third inning and added six more in the top of the sixth to take an 8-1 lead. The Lakers added one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Gannon lead. Ireton singled to lead off the sixth inning and moved to second base on a ground out by sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith. Sophomore right fielder Lisa Preuss singled to center field to score the Lakers second run.

Ireton was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Preuss went 2-for-2 with a RBI.

Freshman Lori Anjelich (9-7) pitched the first 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits, seven unearned runs, and five walks, while striking out four. Senior Kristin Jenner threw the final 1.1 innings, giving up two hits, one unearned run, and three walks.

Grand Valley State started off in the same fashion in game two, scoring a run in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. With one out, Marsh singled to center field and moved to second base on a ground out to third base by Moleski. Ireton tripled to left center field to bring in the first run of the game.

The Lakers added two more runs in the top of the third inning as Ireton hit a two out two-run home run to right center field. Gannon cut the lead to 3-2 as they scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but failed to score in the rest of the game.

Marsh went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Ireton was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.

Stephanie Cole (11-3) pitched five innings of action to record the win. She allowed six hits, two runs, while tallying three strikeouts. Lori Andjelich picked up her second save of the season, throwing the final two innings without allowing a hit.
