Grand Valley State split a doubleheader with Nova Southeastern in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Wednesday. The Lakers won game one, 11-2, and lost game two, 8-0 in six innings. GVSU is now 6-4 overall and will play Upper Iowa at 9:00 a.m. and University of Sciences of Philadelphia at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 9 in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Grand Valley posted the first run of the game in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore designated player Elizabeth Smith started off the inning with a single to left field and was moved to second base on a one out sacrifice bunt by sophomore left fielder Lisa Pruess. The Lakers scored their first run on a single by junior first baseman Crista Buresh.
The Sharks came back to tie the game at 1-1 as they posted a run in the bottom of the second. GVSU busted the game open as they tallied seven runs with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. With one out in the fourth inning, sophomore Sarah Holland singled to center field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Senior third baseman Denise Ireton singled to left center field and Buresh walked to load the bases. Two runs scored on a single to center field by senior catcher Megan Smith. Freshman left fielder Karen Walters singled to left field to bring in another run. Senior center fielder Tara Marsh singled to bring Smith in. Freshman short stop Nichole Woityra and sophomore second baseman Kristin Moleski recorded back-to-back singles to drive in three more runs for the Lakers.
Nova Southeastern added one run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Laker lead to 8-2. Grand Valley pushed the lead to 9-2 as they posted another run in the top of the sixth. Walters singled to left center with one out and advanced to second base on a single to the short stop by Marsh. Woityra singled to left center to bring in Walters.
GVSU added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to seal the 11-2 win. Preuss doubled to center field with one out and advanced to third base on a wild pitch. She scored on a single to center field by Buresh. Walters reached base on a fielding error by the first baseman and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Marsh singled to right field to bring in Buresh.
Freshman pitcher Lori Andjelich improves to 2-1 on the season. She allowed eight hits and two earned runs, while striking out seven.
The Lakers out hit the Sharks 15-8. Marsh led GVSU as she went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Buresh was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while Walters went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Woityra tallied two hits, two RBI, and a run scored.
Nova Southeastern took an early 4-0 lead in the fourth inning and never looked back. The Sharks added a run in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take the 8-0 win.
Sophomore Stephanie Cole (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season, after allowing eight hits, but just one earned run in five innings of action. Junior Allison Crews came in for the sixth inning and allowed four hits and three runs.
