#13 Grand Valley State tallied a key 60-39 win over GLIAC North Division foe Michigan Tech Thursday night. The Lakers improve to 21-3 overall and 14-1 in the GLIAC, while the Huskies fall to 17-6 and 13-3. GVSU leads the GLIAC North and was ranked #3 in the Great Lakes Region, while Michigan Tech was second in the GLIAC North and #4 in the region.
Niki Reams scored the first three baskets of the game for the Lakers, which put her over the 1,000 point mark in just two seasons with the Lakers. Reams needed just five points coming into today's game to reach the milestone.
Michigan Tech jumped out to a 13-9 lead with 12:38 left in the first half, but the Lakers came back to tie the game for the third time on a three-pointer by Erin Cyplik. The Huskies went ahead by one points (18-17) at the 8:23 mark, however, GVSU went on a 16-0 run over a five minute span to take a 33-18 lead. MTU cut the lead to nine points, 33-24, but a Julia Braseth jumper with 24 second left gave the Lakers a 35-24 halftime lead.
GVSU increased its lead early in the second half and pushed it to 17 points (45-28) with 16:04 left. The Huskies cut it to eight points, 45-37, with 11:34 left, but GVSU scored the next six points to take a 51-37 lead with 5:22 remaining in the game. Grand Valley closed out the game with a 9-0 run to tally the 60-39 win.
Michigan Tech scored just two points in the final 11:34 of the game. It marked the third time this season the Lakers held their opponent to just 39 points.
Grand Valley turned the ball over just five times in the game, while forcing 14 Michigan Tech turnovers, which led to 21 GVSU points. The Lakers pulled down 15 offensive rebounds and tallied 15 second chance points.
Senior forward Niki Reams led GVSU with 22 points, six rebounds, two steals, and two assists. She now has 1,017 points at GVSU. Sophomore guard Crystal Zick recorded 14 points, four steals, and four assists, while freshman guard Kim Wyngaard added a career-high eight points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Erin Cyplik posted five points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals and junior center Julia Braseth totaled five points and eight rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
Grand Valley will travel to Hillsdale College on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1:00 p.m. before returning home to host Northwood on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 6:00 p.m.
