#1 Grand Valley State dropped a 64-62 decision to Bellarmine on Sunday afternoon at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The loss snaps the Lakers 26-game winning streak and drops them to 4-1 overall. The Knights improve to 4-0 on the season. GVSU will open the 2006-07 GLIAC season at home on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
Bellarmine jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the 17:35 mark, but the Lakers went on a 6-2 run to tie the game at 6-6. The Lakers took their first lead of the game (11-10) on a three-pointer by Erika Ryskamp with 11:14 left in the game. The Knights knocked down a three-pointer of their own to go ahead, 18-16, but GVSU went on a 10-0 run to take a 26-18 lead with 4:16 remaining in the first half. Bellarmine cut the lead to two points, 26-24, four points by Lauren Buresh gave the Lakers a 30-25 lead at the half.
The two teams battled back and forth in the second half, but the Lakers pushed their lead to eight points (49-41) on an Erika Ryskamp layup with 10:30 left in the game. GVSU held on to a nine point lead, 56-47, with 6:50 left, but Bellarmine scored nine straight points to tie the game at 56-56 with 3:57 remaining. Ryskamp hit two free throws to go ahead by two, but the Knights scored five unanswered points to take a 61-58 lead. A three-pointer by Ryskamp tied the game at 61-61 with 2:03 left and Bellarmine hit a jumper to go back up by two with just 1:11 remaining in the game. A couple of missed shots forced the Lakers to foul with one second left and a Bellarmine free throw put them up, 64-61. Erin Cyplik knocked down one free throw, but it wasn't enough as Bellarmine claimed the 64-62 victory.
Bellarmine scored 21 points off of the Lakers 19 turnovers and added 37 points in the paint, including 20 in the second half. The Lakers knocked down nine three-pointers, six more than the Knights, but shot just 53.6% (15-for-28) from the free throw line.
Senior guard Erika Ryskamp posted 22 points, four rebounds, and three steals for the Lakers. Junior guard Crystal Zick added 17 points, three assists, and two rebounds, while senior center Julia Braseth recorded seven points and four rebounds. Junior forward Erin Cyplik had 11 rebounds, three points, and two steals and senior guard Taushauna Churchwell added four points, four steals, three rebounds, and two assists.
