Lakers Defeat Saint Joseph's, 53-40

#1 Grand Valley State defeated Saint Joseph's, 53-40, on Tuesday in its first road contest of the season. The Lakers improve to 3-0 overall and will host #10 Drury on Friday, Nov. 24 at 7:00 and Bellarmine on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2:00 p.m.

The Pumas jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Lakers cut the lead to two points, 9-7, on a layup by junior guard Crystal Zick at the 12:15 mark. Saint Joseph's then pushed its lead to seven points, going ahead 14-7 at the 8:15 mark. The Pumas did not score again in the first half as GVSU went on a 11-0 run to take an 18-14 lead at halftime.

GVSU continued its run in the second half, scoring the first nine points of the half, with nine of them coming on layups. The Lakers went ahead, 27-14 at the 17:22 mark and the Pumas never cut the lead to less than 10 points in the second half. GVSU went up by 23 points, 44-21 with 7:38 left on a layup by junior guard Courtney Hammond. Saint Joseph's outscored the Lakers 19-9 in the final seven minutes, but it was not enough to overcome the large GVSU lead.

Junior guard Crystal Zick tallied 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks in the Laker victory. Senior guard Erika Ryskamp recorded 14 point, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals, while senior center Julia Braseth added 12 points and five rebounds.

Senior guard Taushauna Churchwell pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds and added two points and two steals. Junior guard Courtney Hammond had six points and three rebounds, while sophomore guard Kim Wyngaard posted two points and a rebound.
