#1 Grand Valley State picked up its second win in as many nights, recording a 63-40 victory over Olivet College Thursday at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. The Lakers improve to 2-0 on the season and will travel to Saint Joseph's College on Nov. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
The Lakers took a seven point lead at the 13:22 mark of the first half on a layup by freshman Carlie Holden. GVSU pushed the lead to 13 points (19-6) as they went on a 7-0 run. The Lakers had a 21-10 lead and then went on a 9-0 run to take a 30-10 lead with 6:39 left in the first half. Senior guard Erika Ryskamp nailed a three-pointer with 1:50 left to give GVSU a 37-14 lead. Kenzie Steward from Olivet hit a three-pointer with 1:01 left, but the Lakers held on to a 37-17 halftime lead.
GVSU came out strong in the second half and senior guard Taushauna Churchwell hit a jumper at the 13:43 mark to put the Lakers up 27 points, 47-20. Olivet cut the Laker lead to 17 points with 4:27 left in the game, but that is the closest they would come to GVSU. Two free throw shots by sophomore forward Kim Wyngaard with 58 seconds left gave the Lakers a 63-40 win.
Senior forward Julia Braseth tallied 16 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Taushauna Churchwell recorded 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Freshman center Lauren Buresh posted nine points and three rebounds and sophomore guard Jenny Steffen added eight points and three rebounds. Senior guard Erika Ryskamp had seven points, four rebounds, and two steals.
