The GVSU women's tennis team will play for the GLIAC Championship on Saturday, Oct. 28 against Northwood. The Lakers earned a trip to the title match with a tough 5-4 victory over the Ferris State on Friday. The win marked Grand Valley State's second of the day, as GVSU defeated Wayne State earlier on Friday. The Championship match against the Timberwolves is set for 10:00 am Saturday in Midland, Mich.
Grand Valley once again jumped out to a lead, capturing two of three doubles matches from the Bulldogs. Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monte recorded another hard-fought victory, defeating Jenna O'Dell and Allison Halbert, 9-8 (7-4). The tandem of Jenna Killips and Jaime Oppenlander came through in No. 3 doubles, winning 8-5. Emily Zellner and Lindsay Grimmer fell in No. 1 doubles by an 8-2 margin.
The Lakers would need to play all six singles matches to seal the win, as the Bulldogs played them extremely tough. Jenna Killips lost a close match in No. 2 singles, as her opponent, Marissa Muchow come from behind to capture a 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 victory. McCall Monte was able to defeat her opponent in three sets, as she had to rally to defeat Ann Grant, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. It also took Audrey Koopsen a decisive third set to claim the win over Jenna O'Dell 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-1. Whitney Bindus earned the only straight-set victory for the Lakers, defeating Katie Perdue, 6-2, 6-2. Lindsay Grimmer dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Molly Basha in the No. singles slot. Emily Zellner also fell in No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-2 to Allison Halbert.
The Lakers carried their solid play in singles matches to the postseason. GVSU has recorded a 6-4 mark in singles play in the GLIAC Tournament. McCall Monte holds an impressive eight-match winning streak at the No. 5 slot. In addition, Jaime Oppenlander and Whitney Bindus have each won seven matches in a row. So far in doubles action, GVSU is 4-2 in the GLIAC Tournament.
