#5 GVSU Takes Down Ferris State, 3-1

Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State volleyball team improved to 24-2 and 17-1 in the GLIAC with a 3-1 win over rival Ferris State Friday night in Allendale. The win is the Lakers' sixth in a row and third straight against the Bulldogs. Seniors Megan Helsen and Meghan Moore tallied 12 and 17 kills, respectively in their last home regular season match as Lakers.

The Lakers and Bulldogs battled back and forth throughout the first game with neither team gaining more than a four point advantage. GVSU took a 29-27 lead after a kill by Erica Vandekopple and looked to have control of game one. Ferris State rattled off two consecutive points to tie it at 29 before an attacking error on Ferris' Lindsay Tye gave Grand Valley a 30-29 advantage. The Bulldogs responded with a pair of kills to claim the 32-30 game one win. GVSU hit a match-low .091 in the game, while Ferris State hit .255 as a team.

GVSU bounced back to claim game two by a 30-27 margin. Once again, neither team claimed more than a four point lead. GVSU took a 23-19 lead on a kill by Vandekopple in the second game before Ferris went on a four point streak to tie the game at 23. Helsen answered with a kill to put the Lakers up one before going on to capture game two and even the match at one game apiece.

The Lakers continued its streak into game three jumping out to a 22-9 advantage thanks to three service aces by Alyson Riley. A kill by Lauren Reber and a service ace by Meghan Moore made it a 29-13 contest before Ferris committed an error to provide the final margin of 30-13. The Lakers hit a match-high .444 as a team in game three, while the Bulldogs hit -.031.

The Lakers looked to close out the match in game four and started off strong holding onto an 18-14 advantage after a kill by Jamie Ashmore. Ferris State battled back and tied the game at 24, before GVSU closed out the game and the match by claiming six of the last nine points.

Senior Meghan Moore tallied 17 kills, seven digs and hit .289 on the night. Fellow senior Megan Helsen added 12 kills and a pair of aces as the pair played their final home regular season match. Jamie Ashmore tallied 42 assists on the night and recorded 12 digs, while hitting .286.

GVSU will take on the fourth seed in the GLIAC North on Tuesday, October 31 in the quarterfinals of the GLIAC Tournament. The Lakers will host the contest after posting a 17-1 record in GLIAC play this season.
