#6 Grand Valley State swept GLIAC North Division foe Northwood, 3-0 (30-28, 30-24, 30-20) in Midland, Mich. on Friday night. The Lakers improve to 19-2 overall and 12-1 in the GLIAC, while the Timberwolves fall to 14-7 and 7-6. GVSU will play at Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2:00 p.m.
Grand Valley trailed, 6-0, to start game one, but fought back take its first lead of the game at 23-22. Northwood tied the game at 24-24 and GVSU rattled off five of the next six points to go ahead 29-25. The Timberwolves scored the next four points to cut the lead to 29-28, but Northwood had an attack error to seal the Lakers 30-28 game one win.
GVSU hit .382 in game two, posting just two errors to the Timberwolves nine. The game remained close most of the way until the Lakers took a four point lead (27-23) late in the game. Grand Valley scored the next three out of four points to take the 30-24 victory.
Grand Valley jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the third game and never looked back. The Lakers went up by as many as 11 points, 26-15 and then sealed the game and the match with a 30-20 win.
Senior middle blocker Meghan Moore recorded a match-high 15 kills and six assisted blocks, while hitting .560. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Reber tallied eight kills, three digs, and an assisted block, while senior outside hitter Megan Helsen posted eight kills and seven digs. Junior middle blocker Erica Vandekopple had seven kills, and hit .385 and sophomore middle blocker Danielle Alexander added five kills, two aces, three assisted blocks as she hit .444. Sophomore setter Jamie Ashmore recorded 39 assists, four digs, three kills, and two assisted blocks, while junior libero Alyson Riley had 17 digs and two aces.
