The Grand Valley State women's tennis team battled for a tough 5-4 win over the Bulldogs of Ferris State on Tuesday in Allendale. Prior to the match, GVSU had not beaten Ferris State since April 9, 2003. In addition, the win marks only the second time GVSU had beaten Ferris State since 1980. The Lakers improve to 6-1 on the season and now have a sole grasp on second place in the GLIAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 5-2 and are currenlty in third place.
Ferris State captured two of three doubles matches from the Lakers, winning in the #1 and #2 slots. Molly Barsha and Marissa Muchow defeated Emily Zellner and Lindsay Grimmer, 8-5. Allison Halbert and Jenna O'Dell recorded an 8-1 win over Audrey Koopsen and McCall Monte. Jenna Killips and Jaime Oppenlander picked the lone doubles victory for GVSU, winning 8-3.
Grand Valley took four of six matches in singles play from Ferris, good enough to seal the victory. Jenna Killips continued her fine GLIAC play with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 comeback win in #2 singles. Sophomore Audrey Koopsen did her part in a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Allison Halbert in the #3 slot. GVSU is having an outstanding season in singles play. Currently, six of seven Lakers own winning records on the year. In addition, four of the seven currently hold winning streaks of four matches or more. Leading the way for GVSU is freshman Whitney Bindus, posting a winning streak of five matches and a record of 8-1, good enough for the team lead. Sophomore Audrey Koopsen has a record of 7-1 and has won four matches in a row.
The Lakers will not see action again until Oct 20-21, when they travel to Findlay and Wayne State for their final two GLIAC matches of the season.
