GVSU Defeats Northern Michigan, 78-71

Grand Valley State tallied a 78-71 win over GLIAC North Division foe Northern Michigan on Saturday in Marquette. The Lakers improve to 11-3 overall and 4-2 in the GLIAC, while the Wildcats are 7-6 overall and suffered their first GLIAC loss (4-1).

Sophomore guard Jason Jamerson hit a three-pointer to start the game and helped the Lakers to an 8-3 lead. The Wildcats came back to tie the game at 8-8, but GVSU went on an 8-0 run, sparked by six points by junior center Dan Redder to take a 16-8 lead. Grand Valley increased their lead to 11 points on another Jamerson three-pointer with 8:53 left in the first half. NMU cut the lead to seven points, as GVSU went into the locker room with a 32-25 halftime lead.

The Wildcats came out hot in the second half, taking their first lead of the game (42-41) with 15:23 left in the game. The two teams battled back and forth before back-to-back three-pointers by Jamerson and redshirt freshman guard Pete Trammell put the Lakers up by nine points. GVSU went on a 14-0 run to take a 68-53 lead and never looked back.

Grand Valley recorded 21 points off the Wildcats 17 turnovers and added 16 second chance points. Grand Valley was led by Jason Jamerson who tallied 22 points and five rebounds. Jamerson was 4-of-6 from behind the three-point arc.

Dan Redder recorded 14 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Callistus Eziukwu added 13 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, and two steals. Senior guard Courtney James tallied eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists and Pete Trammell scored seven points, and added four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The Lakers will return to the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena for a three-game home stint. GVSU will host Lake Superior State on Thursday, Jan. 12 at 8:00 p.m., Northern Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 3:00 p.m., and Gannon on Monday, Jan. 23 at 8:00 p.m. The game on Saturday, Jan. 14 against Northern Michigan will be televised live at Comcast Local.
