#10 Grand Valley State dropped a 64-58 GLIAC road tilt at Michigan Tech Thursday evening in Houghton, Mich. at the SDC Gymnasium. GVSU falls to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in GLIAC action, while Michigan Tech improves to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in GLIAC action.
Michigan Tech led by as many as seven (19-12) in the opening half, while Grand Valley State built a 26-21 advantage after a 14-2 run midway through the open 20 minutes. Husky guard Alicia Schneider hit a pair of free throws with 30 ticks remaining in the opening half to tie the contest at 31-31 and that is how the teams went into lockerroom.
GVSU built a 46-40 advantage with an 8-0 run midway throught the second half, but the Huskies answered and eventually took a 53-52 lead with 6:08 left in the game. Junior guard Erika Ryskamp hit three free throws and a three-pointer to give the Lakers a 58-55 lead with 3:58 remaining, however, that would be the last of the scoring for the Lakers. Michigan Tech reeled off nine straight points, while GVSU misfired on its final eight shots of the game.
Crystal Zick led four Lakers in double figures with 15 points. Niki Reams scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Erika Ryskamp chipped in 11 points and Julia Braseth 10. GVSU shot just 30.8 percent from the floor (16-52), while MTU hit 47.4 percent (18-38). GVSU hit 9-of-20 three pointers, but MTU connected on 7-of-10. The Lakers pulled down 14 offensive rebounds, but managed just four second chance points.
Grand Valley State will return to action Saturday, Jan. 7 at Northern Michigan. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
