#13 Grand Valley State defeated Gannon University, 68-51, in a GLIAC crossover Monday night. The Lakers improve to 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the GLIAC, while Gannon falls to 8-11 and 3-4.
The contest was much closer for the first 30 minutes than the score indicates as Gannon jumped out to an early 9-4 lead. The Lakers then scored nine straight points to take a 13-9 lead with 10:56 left in the first half. The Golden Knights went on a 9-4 run to take back the lead (18-17). The two teams battled back and forth in the final five minutes of the first half before Gannon took a 28-25 lead in to the locker room.
Gannon increased its lead to six points early in the second half, but GVSU scored eight straight to take a 33-31 lead. With ten minutes remaining in the second half, the Lakers increased their lead four (46-42). GVSU then went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 11 points. The Lakers then never looked back and finished the game on an 8-0 run to seal the 68-51 win.
Junior forward Niki Reams tallied a team-high 19 points, while adding four rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Junior forward Julia Braseth posted 17 points and three rebounds, while sophomore guard Crystal Zick added 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Junior guard Erika Ryskamp recorded 10 points, three blocks, three rebounds, and seven assists.
Grand Valley State will hit the road for four GLIAC contests. GVSU will travel to Wayne State (Jan. 26) and Ashland (Jan. 28) this week. The Lakers will head up to Lake Superior State on Feb. 2 and to Northwood on Feb. 9 before returning home on Feb. 11 against Findlay.
