Lakers Defeat Florida Gulf Coast, 3-2

Grand Valley State defeated Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 (28-30, 30-23, 30-22, 28-30, 15-7) in its second match of the Amerihost GVSU Fall Classic Friday night. The Lakers improve to 4-2 overall. GVSU will host Wheeling Jesuit Saturday, Sept. 3 at noon and Minnesota-Duluth at 4:00 p.m.

Florida Gulf Coast took game one, 30-28, while the Lakers took game two 30-23 to tie up the match. The Lakers also took game three, 30-22, but the Eagles came back with a 30-28 win in game four. GVSU took a 9-2 lead in the fifth game, cruising to a 15-7 win to clinch the match.

Five Lakers tallied 10 or more kills in the match. Senior middle blocker Tracy Kirk led the Lakers with 22 kills, a .349 attack percentage, and seven assisted blocks. Senior Tina Tromblay posted 15 kills and 10 digs, while junior Meghan Moore added 13 kills and a .391 attack percentage. Junior Megan Helsen tallied 11 kills, four service aces, and 16 digs. Sophomore Erica Vandekopple had 10 kills, five assisted blocks, and hit .364. Sophomore Alyson Riley posted a match-high 38 digs, while redshirt freshman Jamie Ashmore added 42 assists.
