Grand Valley State ended regular season play with a sweep over Ashland University on Sunday, May 1. The Lakers won both games 2-1, winning the second game in eight innings. GVSU improves to 24-18 overall and 13-7 in GLIAC, while Ashland ends their season with a 27-23 overall and 8-12 GLIAC record. The Lakers claimed the #4 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will play Hillsdale College on Friday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Emerson Park in Midland, Mich.
Ashland jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after scoring the game's first run in the top of the second inning. Grand Valley posted runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to claim the 2-1 win.
Junior center fielder Tara Marsh singled with one out and advanced to second on a single by senior short stop Sarah Paape. The bases were loaded as sophomore first baseman Crista Buresh reached base on an error by the short stop. The lone run of the inning scored as freshman designated hitter Elizabeth Smith reached on an error by the third baseman.
Freshman second baseman Kristin Moleski started off the seventh inning with a single and advanced to second on a groudout by sophomore Jandin Armstrong. Freshman Sarah Holland singled and Marsh drove in the game-winning run with a single.
Marsh was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI to lead the Lakers. Junior Kristin Jenner (10-3) pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits, one earned run, and a walk, while recording seven strikeouts.
Grand Valley struck first in game two, scoring the first run in the top of the sixth inning. Junior third baseman Denise Ireton tripled with one out in the sixth inning and scored as Armstrong reached on an error by the right fielder.
Ashland tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth and neither team scored in the seventh to force the extra innings. Elizabeth Smith led off the eight inning with a home run and the Lakers held Ashland in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win.
Ireton went 3-for-4 in the game with a run scored. Sophomore Allison Crews started the game for the Lakers, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing four hits, one earned run, and two walks, while striking out four. Freshman Stephanie Cole pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and recording a strikeout.
