Grand Valley State defeated Calvin College, 12-1, Wednesday in a non-conference nine inning game. The Lakers improve to 14-5 overall, while Calvin drops to 5-11. GVSU will travel to Saginaw Valley for four GLIAC games this weekend. The two teams will square off for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 1:00 p.m. and return on Sunday, April 10 for two games with the first game slated for noon.
Calvin College scored the first run of the game in the second inning, but GVSU came back to outscore the Knights, 12-0 to pick up the 12-1 victory. Grand Valley tied the game at 1-1 after the second inning. Junior right fielder Nick Sandy was hit by a pitch as he led off the bottom of the second. He stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Lee VanStreain. Sandy scored on a ground out to the second baseman by freshman left fielder Pat Radde.
GVSU posted four more runs in the bottom of the third inning as senior shortstop Ryan Lyster led off the inning with a single to right field. Senior center fielder Brandon McFarland and sophomore catcher Nick Smith posted back-to-back home runs to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead. Senior first baseman Scott Allen walked and got out at second base as Sandy reached first on a fielder's choice. Sandy stole second and scored as VanStreain singled to center field to add GVSU's fourth run of the inning.
The Lakers scored four runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 7-1. McFarland reached second base on an error by the second baseman with one out. Smith bunted for a single, moving McFarland to third base. Allen tallied a sacrifice fly to center field to score McFarland. Sandy walked and Smith scored as VanStreain reached base on an error by the shortstop.
Allen singled and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder to start off a two-run sixth inning for the Lakers. Allen advanced to third on a ground out by Sandy. VanStreain was hit by a pitch and advanced to second as Radde singled up the middle, scoring Allen. Junior Drew Wippich singled to left field to score VanStreain.
Grand Valley added its last three runs of the game in the seventh inning. Junior Chad Rohacs led off the inning with a double to left center and advanced to third on a single by Smith to left field. Sophomore Grant Abraham reached on a fielder's choice, knocking in the first run of the inning. Sandy hit the Lakers third home run of the game, which scored the final two runs of the game.
Junior Nate Weller (2-0) recorded the win for the Lakers, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing three hits and one run, while striking out three. Senior Marty Jackimowicz threw 3.0 innings, giving up just two hits and recording three strikeouts. Nick Sandy closed out the game, throwing the final 2.0 innings, giving up one hit and recorded three strikeouts.
Grand Valley out hit Calvin College, 13-6, and recorded five stolen bases. Smith led GVSU as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. McFarland was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Lyster was 2-for-6 with a run scored. Nine different Lakers recorded a hit in the game.
