The cold weather and the gusting wind did not play an impact on GVSU's hitting as they tallied 15 hits in a sweep over Findlay on Saturday. The Lakers won game one, 3-1, and game two, 10-1 in six innings. GVSU improves to 20-16 overall and 9-5 in GLIAC action, while the Oilers drop to 12-24 and 4-12.
Grand Valley took a 3-0 lead in game one as they posted a run in each of the second, third, and fifth innings. Freshman second baseman Kristin Moleski was hit by a pitch with one out in the second inning and advanced to second on a single by freshman right fielder Sarah Holland. The first run scored as junior left fielder Shelby Brayton reached base on an error by the pitcher. Senior shortstop Sarah Paape led off the third inning with a double to center field and moved to third base on a single by sophomore first baseman Crista Buresh. Paape was knocked in on a sacrifice fly to center field by Moleski. Paape also reached base to lead off the fifth inning on an error by the center fielder. She stole second and moved to third on a Buresh single. Junior third baseman Denise Ireton recorded the third RBI as she singled to bring in Paape.
Findlay scored its lone run in the top of the sixth. Junior Kristin Jenner (8-2) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four hits, one run, and a walk, while striking out three. Freshman Stephanie Cole picked up her third save of the season, throwing the final 1.1 innings without giving up a hit.
Buresh tallied two hits for the Lakers, while Paape was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
Grand Valley jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game two. Three singles scored two runs in the second and a double down the left field line by Ireton scored the Lakers third run in the third inning.
Findlay posted its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. GVSU broke the game open, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth and three runs in the top of the sixth. The Lakers posted five hits and combined with two Oilers errors, GVSU tallied seven runs.
Junior Allison Crews (7-8) started the game, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and the lone run, while striking out one. Cole finished the game, allowing just two hits in the final 3.0 innings of play.
The Lakers tallied 10 hits, while giving up just four. Sophomore Jandin Armstrong went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, while Ireton was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Moleski was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI.
The Lakers will end the regular season as they travel to Hillsdale for a doubleheader on Friday, April 29 and to Wayne State on Saturday, April 30.
