Allendale, Mich.-Grand Valley split a GLIAC doubleheader with Findlay Saturday afternoon (April 2), winning the first game 8-0 and falling in the second game 6-2. The Lakers tallied six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to coast to the win in game one. Grand Valley was unable to overcome six errors in the second game, allowing only two earned runs. The Lakers return to action Sunday, April 3 to wrap-up the season series with the Oilers.
Grand Valley struck first in game one when Scott Smith led off the game with a single to right field, stole second, and scored on a Brandon McFarland RBI single to right field. The Lakers addedanother run in the bottom of the third when Ryan Lyster scored on a sacrifice fly by Scott Allen. The Lakers were held in check until the bottom of the sixth inning when the flood gates opened up. Grand Valley led off the inning with six consecutive singles and all six Lakers crossed the plate. Jeff Sinicki pitched six innings of shutout ball to earn the win. Sinicki struck out seven batters while scattering two hits. Nathan McCrory pitched a perfect seventh, striking out two.
The Lakers were unable to bounce back from six errors in game two as Findlay won 6-2. The Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first half inning as the Lakers recorded two early errors. Grand Valley responded in the bottom half tying the score at two. Scott Smith led off the inning with a single that dropped just in front of the rightfielder and was followed by Scott Allen reaching base on an error by the shortsop. The pair moved ahead a base on a balk by Oiler pitcher Chris Antonides. Smith scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Brandon McFarland. Allen was driven in by an RBI single through the left side by Nick Smith. Smith advanced to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball but was unable to score. The Lakers were held scoreless from that point on andnever had abatterreachsecond base the rest of the game. Findlay added a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh thanks to four errors in the final two innings. Sean McLeod started for the Lakers going 5.1 innings, striking out three, while allowing four runs, two of which were earned.
Brandon McFarland led the Laker offense going 2-6 with one run and three RBI. Nick Smith contributed three hits, one run, and one RBI. Scott Smith went 2-5 with two runs, an RBI, and one stolen base. The Lakers return to action Sunday, April 3 to finish a four-game series against Findlay.
