Grand Valley State swept Gannon University, 7-5 and 5-0, in a GLIAC doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Lakers improve to 14-16 overall and 5-5 in GLIAC action, while the Golden Knights, who are ranked #4 in the region, fall to 21-12 and 4-4.
The Lakers scored two runs in the first inning as junior center field Tara Marsh started off the game with a bunt single. Freshman designated hitter Elizabeth Smith doubled to center field with two outs to bring in the first run. Junior third baseman Denise Ireton doubled to left center to score Smith and give the Lakers a 2-0 win.
Gannon came back in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead, but GVSU tied the game at 3-3 by adding its third run in the top of the third inning. Marsh recorded her second hit of the game, singling to left center to start of the inning and advanced to third base on a single by sophomore first baseman Crista Buresh. Smith posted her second RBI as she singled down the left field line.
The Lakers added four more runs in the top of the fifth. For the third time in the game, Marsh started off the inning with a single. Senior shortstop Sarah Paape was hit by a pitch and Buresh walked to load the bases. The Lakers recorded three consecutive singles to score three runs. Junior left fielder Shelby Brayton reached on an error to bring in the final Laker run of the inning.
Gannon scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Lakers held on to the 7-5 lead.
Junior Kristin Jenner started the game for the Lakers, pitching 2.0 inngs, allowing one hit, three runs, and four walks. Freshman Stephanie Cole (4-6) recorded the win, throwing the final five innings. She allowed four hits, two runs, and a walk, while striking out three.
The Lakers out hit Gannon, 12-5, and were led by Marsh who was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Grand Valley took an early lead again in game two, as they posted two runs in the first inning and three in the second to pick up the 5-0 win. Paape singled to left center with one out and advanced to second on a Buresh single. Ireton and Moleski recorded back-to-back singles to drive in the first run of the game. The second run was scored on a throwing error by the second baseman.
Brayton and Marsh recorded back-to-back singles in the second inning and both scored on a triple by Paape. Buresh brought in Paape on a single to left field to score the game's final run.
Sophomore Allison Crews (4-8) started the game, going 5.0 innings, allowing eight hits, while striking out one. Cole finished the final 2.0 inning, allowing no hits.
Paape, Buresh, and Moleski all recorded two hits for the Lakers.
The Lakers will play Mercyhurst College in another GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m.
