Grand Valley State spilt a GLIAC doubleheader Sunday with Saginaw Valley to go 1-3 in the four-game series. The Lakers won game one 8-3, but fell, 7-3, in game two. Grand Valley is 15-8 overall and 6-4 in GLIAC play. The Lakers will play a conference doubleheader at Hillsdale on Wednesday, April 13 at 2:00 p.m. GVSU will return home on Tuesday, April 19against St. Joseph's (Ind.) in a nine inning non-conference game.
Grand Valley scored first in game one, taking an early 1-0 lead after the second inning, but Saginaw Valley came back to post one run in the third and one in the fourth to go up 2-1. The Lakers tallied three runs on five hits in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. SVSU added its final run in the bottom of the seventh, but GVSU scored four runs on three hits and two Cardinals errors in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win.
Senior center fielder Brandon McFarland led the Lakers, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Senior third baseman Scott Allen went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while freshman left fielder Pat Radde was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. The Lakers posted nine hits and six different batters tallied a hit.
Junior Jeff Sinicki recorded his fourth win of the season, throwing 5.2 innings as he allowed six hits, two earned runs, and three walks, while striking out three. Senior Joe Finnerty tallied his second save of the season pitching the final 1.1 innings of action. He didn't allow a hit, but walked two and struck out one.
Saginaw Valley jumped out to an early lead in game two and never looked back. The Cardinals scored two runs in the first inning, four runs in the third, and another in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead after four innings of action. The Lakers cut the lead to four as they posted three runs on three hits and a Cardinal error in the top of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as SVSU picked up the 7-3 win.
Grand Valley out hit Saginaw Valley 8-5 as six Lakers tallied a hit. Allen was 2-for-4, while sophomore catcher Nick Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Senior Sean McLeod (1-3) suffered the loss, throwing 2.2 innings, giving up three hits, six runs, three earned runs, and three walks. Senior Marty Jackimowicz pitched the final 3.1 innings allowing two hits and one run.
