Grand Valley ended the day with a 7-1 win over UM-Rolla. The Lakers finished the UMSL tournament 2-1. Nate Secor went one for two with a home run and two runs scored. Jeff Sinicki got the win for the Lakers going four innings, giving up one earned run, and striking out two. The Lakers face Southern Missouri State in a doubleheader Monday (Mar. 7) in Joplin, Mo.
The Lakers and Miners felt each other out during the first two innings as both teams were held scoreless. Grand Valley was the first to strike as Brandon McFarland and Scott Smith had rbi singles in the bottom of the third when Grand Valley scored four times. Secor's shot to right field tacked on two more runs for the Lakers the next inning. Nick Smith scored the Lakers final run in the fifth inning on a heady play by Nick Sandy. Sandy hit into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning and moved Smith to third base. Sandy stole second and was able to get into a rundown to allow Smith to score before being tagged.
Kirk Akers provided two innings of hitless relief, while striking out three. Sandy finished the game on the mound for the Lakers, allowing one hit and striking out one. Secor and Clay Ackerman each scored two runs on the night. UM-Rolla stranded nine runners on the night. The Miners had two rallies thwarted in the second and third innings by Sinicki and the Laker defense.
