GVSU Falls in Doubleheader at Bellarmine

Grand Valley dropped a doubleheader at Bellarmine Sunday, falling 5-3 and 2-0. GVSU falls to 5-11 overall and will play a doubleheader at Olivet College on Tuesday, March 22 at 3:00 p.m.

Bellarmine scored one run in the bottom of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead in game one, but GVSU came back and posted three runs in the top of the third to lead, 3-1. Junior designated player Stacie DelChiaro led off the inning reaching second base on an error by the third baseman. Junior catcher Megan Smith and junior Tara Marsh both reached base on errors by the third baseman to load the bases. Freshman right fielder Sarah Holland singled to score the first run for the Lakers. With two outs, senior shortstop Sarah Paape double to bring in the other two GVSU runs.

However, Bellarmine added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game. The Knights posted two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to seal the win.

Junior Kristin Jenner (4-2) recorded the loss, throwing 3.1 innings, allowing two hits, four earned runs, and four walks, while striking out three batters. Sophomore Allison Crews pitched the final 2.2 innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out four.

Holland went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, while Paape was 1-for-3 with two RBI for the Lakers.

Bellarmine posted a run in both of the third and fourth innings of game two and only gave up two hits to the Lakers to claim the 2-0 win. Freshman Stephanie Cole (1-5) pitched all six innings for GVSU, allowing seven hits, two earned runs, while recording five strikeouts.

Marsh and freshman second baseman Kristin Moleski recorded the two Laker hits.
