Lakers Open Tournament With 8-4 Win

Warrensburg, Mo. - Grand Valley sent ten batters to the plate in a six-run second inning that led the Lakers to an 8-4 victory against Bemidji State.  Jeremy Dow started his first game of the season throwing a complete game, striking out 10 and not walking a single batter.  Nick Smith led the Laker offense going two-for-three on the night with three RBI and a run scored.  Casey Robrahn went two-for-three as well, crossing the plate twice.  The Lakers face two tough tests Saturday (Mar. 12) in #12 Emporia State at 4:00 pm CT and #3 Central Missouri State at 7:00 pm CT.

Scott Smith started the scoring for the Lakers scoring on an RBI single by Nick Smith after leading off the inning with a single to right center.  Scott Smith stole second and scored on a hit and run play on the next pitch to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead after the first.  Nick Sandy began the scoring in the second with a deep home run to left center.  Robrahn, Ryan Lyster, Scott Allen, Brandon McFarland, and Nick Smith all scored during the inning.  Smith recorded a double to left field that knocked in two runs and Chad Rohacs had a single through the left side that scored Smith from second.  The six runs was the highest scoring inning on the year for the Lakers.  Rohacs finished the scoring for the Lakers crossing the plate on a Lyster sacrifice fly to right field in the third inning.  Jeremy Dow pitched a complete game for the Lakers giving up four runs on six hits, striking out a season-high 10 batters and walking none.  Dow faced four or fewer batters in eight of the nine innings played. 

Grand Valley is averaging 8.6 runs scored per game and have a team batting average of .345 through 10 games this season.  The Lakers improved to 8-2 on the season and wrap up their spring trip Saturday (Mar. 12) against two top 15 opponents.  The first Laker homestand begins on Friday, March 25 against GLIAC foe Ashland.
