GVSU Claims 60-55 Victory Over Michigan Tech

Allendale, Mich. - Junior guard Courtney James scored seven of GVSU's final nine points in the last 2:42 as the Lakers claimed a 60-55 victory over Michigan Tech before 3,283 fans at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena Saturday. GVSU improves to 15-6 overall and 8-4 in GLIAC action. The Lakers also maintain first place in the GLIAC North Division.

Grand Valley State built a 31-25 halftime lead and opened the second half with three-pointer's by freshman guard Jason Jamerson and junior forward Jeff Grauzer to build a 37-25 lead. Grand Valley State led 40-30 with 16:27 left in the game, but Michigan Tech went on a 15-2 run and held GVSU scoreless for over five minutes to take a 45-42 lead. Courtney James scored on a jumper with 10:40 left to pull GVSU back to within a point (45-44). The game was tied at 51-51 when James hit a jumper to put the Lakers up 53-51. Callistus Eziukwu tallied a putback after James missed a three-pointer to give GVSU a 55-51 lead. Following an MTU bucket, James hit a driving layup with the shot clock under 10 seconds to give the Lakers a 57-53 lead. James hit three of four free throws in the final 12 seconds to seal the win.

Freshman center Callistus Eziukwu led GVSU with 15 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots. James added 15 points, while Jason Jamerson and Mike Hall each scored 10 points. GVSU shot 50 percent from the floor (23-46), while limiting MTU to just 31.6 percent (18-57). MTU was 8-29 from the three-point line and GVSU held a 36-31 rebounding advantage.

Grand Valley State will be at Ferris State Monday (Feb. 7), before returning home for three more games in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
