GVSU Claims 94-87 Victory Over Lake Superior State

Allendale, Mich. - Grand Valley State outscored Lake Superior State 47-32 in the second half Saturday to erase an eight point halftime defecit en route to a 94-87 GLIAC victory. GVSU improves to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in GLIAC action. GVSU remains in a first-place tie with Ferris State in the GLIAC North Division.

GVSU opened the second half with an 8-0 run on a pair of three-pointers by freshman guard Jason Jamerson and a dunk by freshman center Callistus Eziukwu to tie the game at 55-55. The Lakers then took their first lead of the game (58-55) on another Jamerson three-pointer at the 16:31 mark. GVSU led 74-71 with 6:47 left in the game and went on a 12-0 run to take an 86-71 lead. Eziukwu hit a jumper from the paint, senior forward Marcus Wallace scored on a layup and a pair of free throws and Jamerson scored on three straight fast breaks. Jamerson scored 18 points in the second half for GVSU and the Lakers shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the second stanza (16-24). In addition GVSU converted 5-of-8 three-pointers and 10-of-11 free throws in the final 20 minutes.

Lake Superior State led by as many as 14 points (55-41) in the first half, shooting 67.9 percent from the floor (19-28) and 76.9 percent from the three-point line (10-13). The 55 points LSSU scored in the first half were the most GVSU has given up in a half this season.

Grand Valley State scored the final six points of the first half and combined with the 11-0 run to start the second half it turned into a 17-0 run. GVSU shot 59.3 percent for the game (32-54), 64.7 percent from the three-point line (11-17) and 82.6 percent from the charity stripe (19-23). GVSU held a 33-24 advantage on the glass dished out 23 assists.

Jamerson led GVSU with 21 points and hit 5-of-8 three-pointers. Marcus Wallace scored 15 points, dished out a career-high eight assists and pulled down four rebounds. Courtney James added 13 points, four rebounds and hit all seven of his free throw attempts. Freshman center Callistus Eziukwu hit all six of his field goal attempts and pulled down seven rebounds for GVSU. Eziukwu has made 20 straight field goal attempts and is shooting 75.0 percent from the floor this season.

GVSU will host Northwood Wednesday (Feb. 16) at 8 p.m. in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
