Grand Valley State defeated Northern Kentucky, 60-47, in a rematch in Allendale Tuesday night. The Lakers improve to 8-2 overall, while the Norse drop to 6-2. The two teams played at NKU on Nov. 23 and the Norse picked up the 73-63 win.
Northern Kentucky scored the first basket of the game, but the Lakers took their first lead (6-4) of the game on a pair of free throws by Courtney James at the 16:09 mark. The Norse tied the game up at 9-9, but GVSU went on to score the next seven points to take a 16-9 lead with 11:17 left in the half. NKU cut the Laker lead to one point, (21-20) on back-to-back three-pointers by Vincent Humphrey. GVSU pushed their lead back to 28-23 as Pete Trammell knocked down a three-pointer. Jason Jamerson hit a jumper with four seconds left to give the Lakers a 30-26 halftime lead.
Grand Valley shot 42.3% from the field in the first half, while NKU shot 40.9%. Northern Kentucky recorded five three-pointers (5-9), while GVSU hit 3-of-8 from behind the arc.
The Lakers came out strong in the second half, increasing their lead to five points on a three-pointer by Mike Hall at the 15:31 mark. GVSU maintained its lead throughout the second half and increased it to six points as Jeff Grauzer recorded back-to-back tip-ins. GVSU ended the game scoring the last eight points.
Grand Valley shot 45.8% from the field on the game, including 45.5% from behind the three-point arc. NKU shot 37.5% from the field, while hitting 42.9% of their shots from three-point range.
Leading the way for the Lakers was Dan Redder who tallied 10 points, three rebounds, and three blocks, while Jason Jamerson added eight points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Mike Hall, Callistus Eziukwu, and Courtney James all chipped in seven points each.
The Lakers will host Lock Haven on Dec. 28 at 7:00 p.m.
