GVSU Claims 78-41 Victory Over Mercyhurst

Allendale, Mich. - The GVSU Women's basketball team posted a 78-41 GLIAC victory against Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon. Senior forward Niki Reams led all scorers with 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Grand Valley held Mercyhurst to just 22.4 percent (11-49) shooting from the field. GVSU will now head to Hawaii to take part in the Hoop 'N Surf Tournament on Dec. 20 and 21.

Grand Valley opened up a 19 point first half lead due in large part to a 13-0 run over a span of four minutes. The run was capped off on a three-point play by Reams at the 6:09 mark. GVSU committed just one turnover in the first half, while forcing Mercyhurst into nine. Grand Valley held Mercyhurst to just 26.9 percent (7-26) from the field.

GVSU continued its tenacious defense in the second half forcing Mercyhurst to shoot 17.4 percent (4-23). The 41 points scored by Mercyhurst is a season-low for a GVSU opponent.

Junior guard Erika Ryskamp tallied 13 points, pulled down four rebounds, and dished out a season-high seven assists. Junior center Julia Braseth added 15 points in just 19 minutes of work for Grand Valley. Sophomore guard recorded her second consecutive game in double-digits with 10 points.

Grand Valley will head to Hawaii to play in the Hoop 'N Surf Tournament against Valdosta State (Dec. 20) and Dominican (Dec. 21). The next Lakers home contest will be Dec. 30 against Wisconsin-Parkside.
