Lakers Defeat Marygrove, 74-47 in Days Inn Classic

Grand Valley State defeated Marygrove College, 74-47, in their first game of the Days Inn Classic at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. GVSU improves to 3-1 on the season. The Lakers will play Lewis University on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

Marygrove came out tough in the first half, taking a 4-0 lead in the first minute of the game. GVSU took its first lead of the game (5-4) on back-to-back jumpers by Jaida Bourke with 15:02 left in the half. The game was tied at 20-20 with 4:07 remaining before GVSU went on an 8-0 run to take a 28-20 halftime lead. The two teams battled back and forth with the score tying three times and the lead changing nine times in the first half. The Lakers shot just 36.7% in the first half, while the Mustangs shot just 25.0%.

GVSU came out strong in the second half, taking a 10-point lead within the first minute. Marygrove cut the lead to four with 16:30 left, but Grand Valley State went on a 17-7 run to take a 13-point (50-37) lead with 9:53 remaining in the game. GVSU increased its lead to 20 on a layup by Dawn Maynard with 4:14 left and pushed the lead to 27 to end the game on a Nikki Zimmerman layup.

Grand Valley scored 46 points in the paint and 21 points off of Marygrove's 23 turnovers. Leading the way for the Lakers was junior forward Julia Braseth who tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Crystal Zick added 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Senior center Jaida Bourke posted a career-high 11 points. GVSU played without starters Niki Reams and Erika Ryskamp.
