Lakers Defeat Southern Arkansas, 74-61

Grand Valley State defeated Southern Arkansas University, 74-61, Sunday afternoon in the T.J. Sales Tipoff Classic hosted by Drury University. The Lakers improve to 2-1 overall on the season and will host the Days Inn Classic on Nov. 25-26.

GVSU jumped out to an early 10-point lead on back-to-back three-pointers by Erin Cyplik and Erika Ryskamp to put the Lakers ahead 13-3 with 15:32 left in the first half. Grand Valley scored 11 straight points on four jump shots and a free throw to increase their lead to 19 points (24-5) with 7:24 remaining. Erin Cyplik scored eight points over a two minute span to put the Lakers up by 23 (33-10) with 3:03 left in the first half. GVSU took a 37-18 lead into the locker room at the half as they scored 13 points off of Southern Arkansas turnovers. The Lakers shot 52.2% from the field in the first half.

Grand Valley continued to dominated in the second half, shooting 46.9%, but was outscored 43-37 by Southern Arkansas. The Lakers went up by as many as 27 points in the second half.

Sophomore guard Erin Cyplik led the Lakers with 16 points and nine rebounds and junior forward Julia Braseth added 15 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Sophomore guard Crystal Zick posted 12 points, three assists, and three rebounds, while junior guard Erika Ryskamp added 11 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Fifteen different Lakers played in the victory.

Julia Braseth and Erin Cyplik were named to the T.J. Sales Tipoff Classic All-Tournament Team for their performances in the Lakers two games.

Grand Valley State will host Marygrove College on Friday, Nov. 25 at 7:00 p.m. and Lewis University on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the Days Inn Classic.
