Oct. 8, 2005

Box Score

Allendale, Mich.- Grand Valley State improved to 12-1 on the season and 3-0 in the GLIAC after winning an overtime contest, 2-1, over Mercyhurst. Freshman Katy Tafler knocked in the game winner 1:31 into the overtime. The Lakers bounced back from a Mercyhurst goal with just four minutes to play in the match, to capture the key GLIAC victory.

Sophomore Susan Christenson opened up the scoring at the 32 minute mark on a header after a free kick from Senior Mirela Tutundzic. Christenson's goal appeared to be all the Lakers would need as Kristina Nasturzio turned away five Mercyhurst shots and a number of crosses, but Mercyhurst knocked in the equalizer at the 86 minute mark. GVSU and Mercyhurst battled back and forth for the final four minutes before heading to overtime. Grand Valley took control in the extra session moving the ball into Mercyhurst territory recording a quick shot. Tafler hit a shot that appeared to be saved and deflected off a Mercyhurst defender into the goal. The goal was Tafler's 17th on the year and tied her for the third highest single-season total in Laker annals.

Grand Valley returns to action Sunday (Oct. 9) at 1 PM when they host GLIAC foe Gannon.
