#1 Grand Valley State scored on its first four possessions and never looked back en route to a 38-10 victory at Hillsdale College Saturday night. GVSU improves to 6-0 overall and in GLIAC action. The victory sets up next Saturday's showdown versus #4 Saginaw Valley State in Allendale.
Sophomore cornerback Brandon Carr picked off a Mark Nicolet pass on the Chargers' fifth play from scrimmage. GVSU drove 58 yards in 11 plays and placekicker Scott Greene booted a 19 yard field goal to put the Lakers up 3-0. Grand Valley State then scored touchdowns on three straight possessions. Senior WR Brandon Langston caught a 4-yard TD pass from Cullen Finnerty and Greene added the PAT to give GVSU a 10-0 lead. Junior running back Astin Martin then broke loose with a 54 yard TD run and Greened added another PAT to increase the lead to 17-0. Finnerty scored on a 30 yard TD run on a fourth and one play to put the Lakers up 24-0. GVSU moved down to the Charger four late in the first half, but a Finnerty pass was tipped and picked off by Chad Gurica. GVSU tallied 321 yards of total offense in the first half, including 268 rushing yards. Astin Martin rushed for 143 yards and one TD on 14 carries. The Laker defense held Hillsdale to 72 total yards in the opening 30 minutes.
Senior QB Jeff Dock hit WR Terry Mitchell on a short slant that Mitchell took 57 yards for a TD. Greene added the PAT and GVSU led 31-0 with 6:00 left in the third quarter.
Hillsdale got on the board with Mike Menchinger 21 yard field goal with 7.5 seconds left in the third quarter. The 13-play, 76-yard drive took 5:53. The Lakers answered with a 5-play, 65-yard scoring drive. Dock hit Mitchell with a 42 yard pass completion and Hukill capped the drive with a three-yard run to pay dirt to give the Lakers a 38-3 lead. Hillsdale scored their lone touchdown on a 4-yard run with 5:05 left in the game.
The Lakers tallied 597 yards of total offense, including a season-high 358 yards rushing. Astin Martin rushed for a career-high 169 yards and one TD on 17 carries, while Ryan Hukill added 81 yards and a TD. Finnerty completed 11-of-18 passes for 98 yards and a TD, while senior Jeff Dock completed 5-of-6 for 141 yards and a TD. Junior Terry Mitchell caught three passes for 127 yards and a TD. The Laker defense limited Hillsdale to 247 yards of total offense. Brandon Carr picked off a pass and recorded nine tackles. GVSU recorded a season-high six QB sacks.
