Grand Valley State scored the final four points of the game to pick up a 65-61 GLIAC victory over Mercyhurst College in Erie, Penn. Thursday night. GVSU improves to 13-4 overall and 6-2 in GLIAC play and will travel to Gannon for a GLIAC contest on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 3:00 p.m.
GVSU trailed by three points with seven seconds left in the first half, but a three-pointer by Jason Jamerson as time expired sent both teams to the locker room tied 31-31. GVSU lead by as many as seven points in the first half.
Grand Valley came out strong in the second half, scoring the first nine points to take a 40-31 lead with 16:52 left. Mercyhurst then went on a 11-0 run to take a two point (42-40) lead with 12:40 remaining. The two teams battled back and forth, tying the game five times and forcing nine lead changes in the second half. Mercyhurst went up by five points with 2:38 left in the game, but GVSU outscored MC 6-1 to tie the game at 61-61 with 1:17 remaining. Mike Hall rebounded and scored off a Marcus Wallace miss to give the Lakers a 63-61 lead with 16 seconds left. Mercyhurst missed a three-pointer and two free throws by Courtney James sealed the 65-61 win.
The scored was tied nine times and there were 12 lead changes in the game.
Senior guard Marcus Wallace recorded a game-high 20 points, four rebounds, and four steals, while junior guard Courtney James added 12 points and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Mike Hall chipped in 11 points and five rebounds and freshman guard Jason Jamerson tallied eight points.
