Grand Valley State defeated West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-2, in eight innings as freshman Crista Buresh tallied a two-hit to drive in the game-winning run at the Great Lakes Regional Championship. GVSU improves to 35-7 overall. GVSU will face Lewis University in a rematch on Saturday at 10 a.m. The winner will face Northern Kentucky in the Great Lakes Regional title game.
GVSU got on the board first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior shortstop Sarah Paape tripled to right center to lead off the inning and scored as senior second baseman Jennifer Goldschmeding reached on an error by the shortstop. Pitcher Jennifer Mackson reached on a fielder's choice and senior first baseman Sara Vroegindewey tallied a two-out walk to put runners on at first and second. Senior third baseman Lindsay Crawford singled to right field, scoring the second run of the inning.
West Virginia Wesleyan tied the game up by scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning. The game went into extra innings before GVSU tallied the winning run in the bottom of the eight. Paape tallied a one-out single to center field, advancing to second on a sacrafice by Goldschmeding. Paape scored on the single by Buresh to win the game for the Lakers.
Mackson (24-3) pitched all eight innings for GVSU, allowing just four hits and two runs, while recording six strikeouts.
Paape went 2-for-4, while Buresh, Crawford, and Goldschmeding each tallied an RBI for GVSU.
