Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader from Hillsdale College Wednesday afternoon in Allendale, winning game one by a 9-0 score and game two 5-0. GVSU, ranked third in the NCAA DII North Central regional rankings, improves to 21-12 overall and 11-5 in GLIAC action.
GVSU broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the third of game one with three runs. 3B Scott Allen singled in SS Ryan Lyster who walked and stole second to open the inning. RF Joe Mertes walked and 1B Tim Hudnall gapped a double that scored Allen and Mertes. The Lakers scored three more in the fourth on three hits. DH Dan Fletcher single and 2B Scott Smith walked before Allen singled to left scoring Fletcher. Allen and Smith pulled off a double steal and RF Joe Mertes single in Smith. Hudnall then singled in Allen to close out the scoring in the fourth. The Lakers scored a single run in the fifth after a LF Nick Sandy doubled to left and scored on a Lyster single. GVSU closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when CF Brandon McFarland hit a two-run homer to left. Jon Micoff (6-1)picked up the win for GVSU, yielding four hits and striking out three in four innings of work. Sean McLeod pitched two scoreless innings before giving way to Joe Finnerty. Allen was 2-3 with two RBI, while Hudnall drove in three runs on two hits.
SS Ryan Lyster put the Lakers on the board first in bottom of the third with a solo shot to left. GVSU scored another single run in the fourth after McFarland walked, stole second and scored on Fleter's single to center. C Elijah Beckwith notched a two-run HR to leftcenter in the bottom of the sixth to put GVSU up 4-0 and Lyster single in Sandy who reached on an error. Lyster drove in a pair of runs on two hits, while Beckwith added two RBIs. Smith and McFarland each tallied a pair of hits. The Lakers' bid for a no hitter was broken up with two outs in the top of the seventh when Charlie Krebs singled to right for Hillsdale. Jason LaBaumbard picked up his third win of the year (3-2) with four innings of hitless ball. McLeod pitched two hitless innings with three strikeouts before giving way to Finnerty in the seventh.
Grand Valley State will host Mercyhurst Friday (1 p.m.) and Saturday (12) at the GVSU Baseball Field.
