Lakers Sweep Findlay in GLIAC Doubleheader

Grand Valley State swept Findlay, 2-0, 3-2, in a GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday. The Lakers improve to 20-4 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC. GVSU will play Ashland University in a GLIAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 4.

The Lakers won game one 2-0 as senior pitcher Jennifer Mackson (13-2) recorded a two-hitter. Mackson tallied nine strikeouts in the game.

The game was scoreless until GVSU tallied their two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Katelyn Curtiss started off the inning with a walk and advanced to second as sophomore CF Tara Marsh got on first base with a bunt single. The first run scored as junior SS Sarah Paape reached on an error by the second baseman. Senior 3B Lindsay Crawford knocked in the second run as she singled.

Marsh, Crawford, and sophomore RF Shelby Brayton tallied the Lakers three hits in game one.

GVSU recorded a 3-2 victory in game two as sophomore Kristin Jenner picked up her fifth win of the season after pitching 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, while adding five strikeouts. Mackson picked up her second save of the season as she threw the final two outs of the game.

Grand Valley struck first as they scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Katelyn Curtiss started off the season with a single to center field and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Sarah Paape tallied a triple to left center, scoring Curtiss. Senior 1B Sara Vroegindewey singled down the left field line, scoring the second run of the inning.

Findlay tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs, but GVSU came back in the fifth adding another run to seal the 3-2 win. Paape started off the bottom of the fifth inning by doubling to left center. Paape advance to third on a ground ball and scored on a single by Vroegindewey.

Vroegindewey was 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Paape was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore RF Miranda Titler went 2-for-2 as did Curtiss.
