Grand Valley State swept a home GLIAC doubleheader with Hillsdale College, winning game one 3-1 and game two 6-0. The Lakers improve to 26-4 overall and 8-0 in GLIAC action. GVSU will travel to Saginaw Valley for a GLIAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 14 with game one beginning at 3:00 p.m.
The Lakers tallied one run in the bottom of the second and added two more in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Senior 1B Sara Vroegindewey started off the second inning with a bunt single, but got out at second on a fielder's choice, which put senior 2B Jen Goldschmeding at first. Sophomore RF Shelby Brayton hit a two-out triple to center field to score Goldschmeding.
Freshman DH Katelyn Curtiss reached first on a one-out walk in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore CF Tara Marsh reached first on an error by the pitcher and the bases became loaded as junior SS Sarah Paape tallied the second walk of the inning. Goldschmeding singled to left field with two outs, knocking in the two Laker runs.
Hillsdale scored one run in the top of the sixth, but the Laker defense and senior pitcher Jennifer Mackson held on to seal the 3-1 win. Mackson (16-2) threw all seven innings, allowing five hits and one runs, while striking out 10 Charger batters.
Brayton went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Goldschmeding went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Lakers scored early in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Curtiss started off the game by hitting a double to left center and advanced to third on a ground out by Marsh. Curtiss scored as Vroegindewey reached first base on a Charger error.
GVSU added another run in the third as Marsh started off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrafice bunt by Paape. Goldschmeding hit a two-out single to center field to score the run.
The Lakers broke the game open by added four more runs in the top of the sixth to seal the 6-0 victory. Sophomore RF Miranda Titler was hit by a pitch to start off the ining and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Sophomore catcher Megan Smith doubled to score the first run. Senior Kate Danak pinch hit for the Lakers and hit a two-out single to center field to score Smith. Paape added another single and advanced to second base on the throw. Vroegindewey singled to right field, driving in the last two Laker runs.
Sophomore Kristin Jenner (8-1) pitched all seven innings for the Lakers, allowing just three hits and two walks, and recorded one strikeout. Curtiss went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Danak went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Vroegindewey added two RBI and Smith went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
