Grand Valley State dropped an 8-5 decision to Hope College Wednesday afternoon in Allendale. GVSU falls to 13-11 overall, while Hope improves to 10-9. GVSU will be at Hillsdale College on Wednesday for a GLIAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
GVSU struck first with a single run in the bottom of the fourth, but Hope came back with three in the top of the fifth. GVSU RF Joe Mertes tied the game with a two-run double and the bottom half of the inning. The Lakers scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth, but Hope scored one in the seventh and four in the eighth to take an 8-4 lead. The Lakers scored in the bottom of the eighth.
GVSU managed just five hits on the afternoon. Mertes was 1-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Marty Jackimowicz started the game for the Lakers and yielded three runs on three hits in five inning of work. Matt Middleton took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits in 2.1 inning of work.
