Grand Valley State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but MSU scored a combined nine runs in the second, third and fourth innings to claim a 13-8 non league contest. GVSU falls to 12-7, while MSU improves to 5-10.
The Lakers opened the scoring with three in the top of the first. The Spartans scored two in the second and the third, but GVSU scored a pair in the top of the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. MSU then scored five runs, four unearned with two outs, in the bottom of the fourth to take a 9-5 lead. Grand Valley State pulled to within two (10-8) after scoring two in the top of the seventh, but the Spartans scored iced the game with two in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Junior 1B Tim Hudnall led the Lakers, going 3-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Hudnall homered for the second time this season. Junior 3B Scott Allen went 3-5 with one RBI and one run scored, while Dan Fletcher went 1-3 with two RBIs.
Grand Valley State will be at Ashland for a key four-game GLIAC set Saturday and Sunday.
