Courtney James tallied a three-point play with 1.3 seconds left on the clock to lift Grand Valley State to an 86-83 victory over Saginaw Valley State Saturday night. Grand Valley State improves to 13-10 overall and 5-9 in GLIAC action, while SVSU falls to 8-15 overall and 2-13 in league action.
Grand Valley State trailed 19-18 with 8:26 left in the opening half, but the Lakers went on a 27-7 run to build a 45-26. SVSU hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make the halftime score 45-29 in favor of GVSU. GVSU led 52-36 before the Cardinals went on an 18-0 run over a six minute span. Mekele Cooper hit a layup to give SVSU a 54-52 lead. Neither team led by more than four points in the final 11:22 of the game. James scored GVSU's final six points of the contest, including the game-winner.
Eric Chess led GVSU with 24 points and five rebounds before fouling out. James added 18 points, eight assists and five rebounds, while Marcus Wallace scored 11 points and Mike Hall 10. The Lakers shot 49.2 percent from the floor and converted 9-of-26 three-pointers.
Grand Valley State will host Ferris State Monday (Feb. 16) at the GVSU Arena. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
