Niki Reams tallied a career-high 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, but its wasn't enough as #15 Lake Superior State claimed an 81-69 victory over Grand Valley State. GVSU falls to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in GLIAC action, while Lake Superior State improves to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league action.
It was a game of runs from the closing minutes of the first half throughout the conclusion of the game in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. LSSU went on a 6-0 run in the final two minutes of the first half to take a 38-30 lead into the lockerroom. LSSU went on an 11-4 run to open the second half to build a 49-34 lead at the 16:13 mark of the second half. However, GVSU went on a 16-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 50-49 lead at the 10:49 mark when Erica Ryskamp hit a bucket. Crystal Zick tied the contest with a pair of free throws at the 8:25 left, but LSSU outscored Grand Valley 12-4 to take a 67-59 lead with 4:36 remaining. GVSU pulled to within six on a Reams basket, but that is as close as GVSU would get the rest of the contest.
Reams led the Lakers with 30 points and 10 rebounds, while Janine Guastella hit four three-pointers en route to 12 points. GVSU shot just 39.7 percent from the floor. The difference of the game was at the charity stripe where LSSU converted 32-of-36 and GVSU attempted just 15, making nine.
