#11 Grand Valley State picked up a big 3-1 (36-34, 24-30, 30-25, 30-23) win over GLIAC foe Northern Michigan Friday night. The Lakers improve to 24-4 overall and 16-1 in GLIAC play. Grand Valley will play Michigan Tech in the Volley Bash at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 5:00 p.m.
The two nationally-ranked teams battled back and forth in the first game, but the Lakers pulled up the 36-34 win. NMU came back to win game two, 30-24, but GVSU won games three, 30-25, and four, 30-23 to seal the win.
GVSU tallied a .230 attack percentage, while Northern Michigan hit just .167. The Lakers tallied 72 kills, seven service aces, and 22 blocks. Junior Tracy Kirk tallied a team-high 19 kills, five digs, and three blocks, while sophomore Megan Helsen added 16 kills, 16 digs, and three assisted blocks. Junior Lauren Hanson recorded 13 kills and seven blocks. Junior Tina Tromblay added 11 kills, 20 digs, and three blocks, while redshirt freshman Alyson Riley posted a team-high 26 digs. Senior Stephanie Maciasz-Dow tallied nine kills and four assisted blocks. Junior Michele Ehrlich recorded 43 assists and nine digs, while senior Leah Kunz added 20 assists.
With tonight's win the Lakers clinched the #1 seed in the GLIAC North Division. First round action will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 10 in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
