Freshman center Callistus (Bean) Eziukwu set a GVSU single-game record with 12 blocked shots Saturday night at DI foe IUPU-Ft. Wayne, but it wasn't enough as GVSU dropped a 61-54 decision. GVSU falls to 1-1 overall.
Grand Valley State trailed 27-26 at the half, but the IPFW built a 38-30 on a Justin Hawkins three-pointer at the 17:00 minute mark. GVSU trimmed the lead to three on three occasions, the last coming on a pair of free throws by forward Mike Hall at the 5:51 mark. However, the Mastadons scored five quick points to boost their lead back to eight (55-47).
In addition to his 12 blocked shots, Eziukwu scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds. Sophomore Mike Hall scored a team-high 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Marcus Wallace tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists. GVSU turned the ball over just 12 times, but were outrebounded 48-36. GVSU hit 24-of-56 shots from the floor, but just 4-of-16 from the three-point line. GVSU attempted just four free throws on the night as IPFW was called for just 10 fouls. GVSU hit five more field goals in the game, but the Mastadons hit eight treys and were 15-for23 from the charity stripe.
